The FIRE math, in plain words
- FIRE number (FI number)
- = Yearly spending Γ· safe withdrawal rate
- $40,000 a year at the 4% rule: $40,000 Γ· 0.04 = $1,000,000, or 25Γ your yearly spending.
- Coast FI number
- = FI number Γ· (1 + real return) ^ years until 60
- At 35 with a 5% real return: $1,000,000 Γ· 1.05Β²β΅ β $295,000 invested today.
- Freedom days
- = Invested Γ· yearly spending Γ 365
- $100,000 invested and $40,000 a year of spending: about 912 days of freedom already bought.
- Progress to FI (% free)
- = Invested Γ· FI number
- $250,000 invested toward a $1,000,000 number: 25% free, a quarter of every year covered.
A simple model of how saving and time compound, not a forecast or financial advice. Returns are real (after inflation), so every figure is in today's money.
More than a calculator
Your FIRE number, kept up to date by your real money
A calculator gives you a number once. Ginkou keeps it true: your spending sets it, every account you hold counts toward it, and your freedom date moves the moment your money does.

Your spending sets your number
Import a bank statement or log spending in three taps. Ginkou suggests your yearly spending from your last three months, so your number follows the life you actually live.
Every investment, every currency
Brokerage, retirement accounts, savings, crypto and gold, each kept in its own currency and added up in the one you choose, with fresh daily rates.
Only what can pay for your life
Your home and car count in your net worth, not in your freedom progress. You can't sell the kitchen to buy groceries.
A date that moves with you
Invest a little more or spend a little less and your freedom date updates right away, with your freedom days, Coast FI and progress beside it.
Milestones
Every step up buys back time
FIRE isn't one finish line years away. Each milestone covers more of every year with your own money, and Ginkou marks each one as you reach it.
Know your number
Most people never work it out. Once you do, every money choice has a price you can see: years of work, or years of freedom.

Questions
FIRE questions, honest answers
What is FIRE?
FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. The idea: invest enough that the returns can pay for your life, so work becomes optional. Many people don't stop working at all; they just get to choose what they do and how much.
How is my FIRE number calculated?
Your FI number is your yearly spending divided by a safe withdrawal rate. At the classic 4% rule that's 25 times what you spend in a year: spend $40,000 and your number is $1,000,000. You can set the rate anywhere from 2.5% (more cautious) to 5%.
What is Coast FI?
The point where you've invested enough that, without adding another cent, growth alone gets you to your FI number by a traditional retirement age. Ginkou shows your Coast FI amount for age 60. After it, you only need to earn what you spend.
What return does the calculator assume?
A 5% real return by default, meaning after inflation, so every figure is in today's money. You can change it from 2% to 9%. It's a simple model to show how saving and time compound, not a forecast.
What counts toward my FI progress?
Investments, retirement accounts, savings, crypto and precious metals. Your home and car count in your net worth but not toward financial independence, because you can't live off them without selling them.
Can I track investments in different currencies?
Yes. Each account keeps its own currency, whether that's a dollar brokerage, a euro ETF account, Bitcoin or gold, and your progress adds up in the currency you choose, using fresh daily rates. It all works offline too.
Lean FIRE, Fat FIRE, Barista FIRE?
They're all the same math with a different yearly spending. Lean FIRE is a frugal budget, Fat FIRE a comfortable one, and Barista FIRE covers part of your spending with part-time work. Set the spending you want to live on and Ginkou works out that number.
Is Ginkou free? Is this financial advice?
It's free, with no ads and no premium tier, and your data stays on your device unless you choose to sync it. It isn't financial advice: Kai helps you see your own numbers and build habits, but for big decisions talk to a licensed professional.
