The savings goal math, in plain words
- Monthly savings needed
- = (Cost − already saved) ÷ months left
- A $3,800 trip, $500 saved, 12 months away: $3,300 ÷ 12 = $275 a month.
- Weekly and daily amount
- = Monthly amount × 12 ÷ 52 weeks (or ÷ 365 days)
- $275 a month is $3,300 a year: about $63 a week, or $9 a day.
- Months to your dream
- = (Cost − already saved) ÷ what you save a month, rounded up
- $3,300 to go at $300 a month: 11 months.
- A price in another currency
- = Price ÷ units per dollar (or your currency)
- A ¥600,000 trip at ¥157.86 per $1: about $3,801.
A simple plan with no interest or price changes, not financial advice. Currency conversions use recent reference rates; the rate you get when you pay will differ.

Questions
Savings goal questions, honest answers
How much should I save each month for a goal?
Take what it costs, subtract what you've already saved, and divide by the months until you need it. A $3,800 trip with $500 saved and 12 months to go needs $275 a month, which is about $63 a week or $9 a day.
How long will it take to reach my savings goal?
Divide what's left to save by what you can put away each month, and round up. $3,300 to go at $300 a month takes 11 months. Pick “By a monthly amount” in the calculator and it gives you the month you'll get there.
How do I save for a trip abroad in another currency?
Price the trip in the currency you'll spend, then convert it into the one you save in. A ¥600,000 trip to Japan is about $3,801 at ¥157.86 per dollar. Ginkou keeps both and updates the rate daily, so a weaker yen shows up as a cheaper trip.
How much do I need for a house deposit?
It depends on your country and lender, but deposits are often between 5% and 20% of the price, plus fees. Work out that amount, set it as the cost and pick a date: the calculator tells you what to save each month. Check the exact figure with your lender.
What is a sinking fund?
A sinking fund is money you put aside a little at a time for a cost you know is coming, like a wedding, a car or a holiday. It's the same math as this calculator: the cost divided by the months you have. In Ginkou each one is its own jar.
Can I save for several goals at once?
Yes. Each dream gets its own jar with its own price, date and currency, linked to the accounts that hold the money. Ginkou shows what each one needs a month and the total across all of them in the currency you choose.
What happens if I miss a month?
Nothing breaks. The months left get shorter and the monthly amount is worked out again from what's really in the jar, so you see exactly what it takes to stay on track, or how far a new date would push it.
Is Ginkou free? Is this financial advice?
It's free, with no ads and no premium tier, and your data stays on your device unless you choose to sync it. It isn't financial advice: Ollie helps you see your own numbers and stick to a plan, but for big decisions like a mortgage talk to a licensed professional.
